Ceramics that drain, clean, and reuse water to improve the planet’s health and people’s lives.

LifeCersuds: the first steps

Balance of the first six months

One of the first tasks was to map the surplus ceramic materials stock. In addition, the permeability data of the samplings conducted in Benicàssim were analysed. The requirements to be applied to this flooring are currently being defined.

Definition has also commenced of a system for developing the first prototypes: the CERSUDS system involves developing a permeable surface whose skin is made up of an innovative system of low environmental impact, which uses in-stock ceramic tiles of low commercial value. The system will enable surface run-off water to be reduced by almost 90%.

The action plan at Aveiro and Fiorano is being monitored, characterising the ceramic material and compiling hydrological and hydraulic data, in addition to information on the project partners’ national legal regulations. With regard to project dissemination, of particular note in these first six months has been the launch of the web page www.lifecersuds.eu and the creation of an image for the project.

The first six months have also witnessed participation at several conferences and events, such as CLIMATHON, the XVth Meeting of the Working Group on Impacts and Adaptation of the Spanish Office for Climate Change, the FACSA XIVth Technical Info Days, and the RedSuDS 2017 Info Day: Challenges and Prospects for SuDS in Spain.

In addition, contacts are being laid with other LIFE projects, such as LIFE Urban Proof http://urbanproof.eu and LIFE DrainRain http://www.lifedrainrain.com/es/inicio/.

Sharing knowledge for sustainability

LifeCersuds has created a group of experts on sustainable urbane drainage systems

The group will act as a think tank to contribute to debate and reflection and will seek to establish a common position in relation to the transition model of this type of sustainable urban drainage systems to foster their regional and national implementation by public authorities, research centres, universities, and other organisations linked to these fields of application, prioritising optimal use of water resources, mitigation of the adverse effects of climate change, and reduction of CO2 emissions. LifeCersuds News

Generating Networking

The Lithuanian Ministry of Environment has expressed its interest in the LifeCersuds drainage system and proposes future collaborations in European projects.
Please note ...

Curse on Energy Efficiency in Ceramics Manufacturing

The course analyses thermal energy consumption in ceramics manufacture and the process variables that most influence the energy efficiency of the facilities. Different tools are displayed for studying a facility’s energy performance as well as for experimentally measuring the main process variables. In addition to theoretical contents, case studies are shown and practical exercises are done. For further information, please see: formacion@itc.uji.es

International Presentation

The LifeCersuds drainage system was presented at CEVISAMA, a major international trade show for interior design, architecture, and design, held in Valencia (Spain).

New sustainable applications for architecture

In the Smartker project, funded by the Valencian Institute of Business Competitiveness (IVACE) through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), a permanent surveillance system for detecting the emergence in the market of new smart systems for architecture and the living environment was developed. Based on the information gathered and the trials conducted with the different systems, sensors, actuators, and software, new smart ceramics solutions aimed at the ceramic industry are proposed.
